Post 1: Launching My Inquiry

For my free inquiry project this term, I have chosen to explore a topic that feels both personally meaningful and professionally relevant: the connection between fitness and our mental health for teaching. As someone preparing to enter the education field, I am becoming increasingly aware of how well‑being shapes learning, teaching, and the overall atmosphere of a classroom. Stress, burnout, anxiety, and lack of movement affect both educators and young people, and I want to understand how physical activity can support healthier school environments.

I am approaching this project with genuine curiosity. I have always known that exercise can improve mood and reduce stress, but I have never taken the time to dig deeper into why it works, how much movement is needed to make a difference, really what it looks like, or how teachers and students can realistically integrate fitness into their busy lives. I am also interested in how outdoor activity can support well‑being in accessible and sustainable ways.

My Inquiry Question – How can fitness support the mental health of teachers and students?

Why This Matters

I think this matters because teachers are facing high levels of stress and burnout, and students are navigating academic pressure, social challenges, and mental health concerns at younger ages. Movement is one of the simplest, most accessible tools we have to support our emotional regulation, focus, and overall well‑being and if I can learn how fitness and mental health intersect. Then I will be better prepared to support my future students and myself.

My Learning Plan

I have a straightforward layout for this project to show my weekly goals, resources, and reflections. Over the next several posts, I will be:

  • Briefly looking at the science behind exercise and mental health
  • exploring wellness apps and digital tools
  • trying out routines myself
  • learning from mentors
  • designing simple wellness strategies for teachers and students
  • reflecting on challenges and new questions

What I Hope to Learn

By the end of this project, I want to understand:

  • how movement can affect stress, focus, and emotional regulation in my life.
  • what kinds of routines are realistic after a long school day and offer some ideas for what works.
  • try to understand how technology can support wellness
  • better understand what teachers and students actually need to feel mentally healthy
  • how I can share this and or apply these ideas in my future classroom

I am excited to get started and see where this learning takes me.
